Step by Step – Patching SharePoint 2010 RTM VM with latest Service Packs and CUs

I wanted to post this article for a while. This is mainly as my own self note.

I have upgraded my SharePoint 2010 RTM VM to SharePoint 2010 SP1 and February 2012 CU last April. Since I have many VMs with many snapshots, many times I have to go through same patching process again and again and I have to ensure I have been installing software in the right order. Many times I ask myself same questions again and again – Do I need to install SharePoint Foundation SP1? Do I need to run SharePoint Configuration wizard every time I install SP1 or CU or running SharePoint configuration wizard only once as last step would be sufficient?

Instead of going through same process again and again, In this walk through, I am going to document patching Single Server Farm – SharePoint Server RTM VM with SharePoint Server SP1 and SharePoint Server Feb 2012 Cumulative Updates which I can refer during future patching process. It is important to note that same order of installing patches would apply to any future service packs and cumulative updates

Step 1 – Download all the software – Exact file names may be different for different Service Packs and different CUs but overall process is same.

Following links are for the Service Pack 1 and February 2012 Cumulative Updates.

Step 2 – Understand the high level Process – Even though SharePoint Server SP1 and CU would include foundation bits, it is preferable to install both SharePoint Foundation SP1 and CU along with SharePoint Server SP1 and CU. In same breath, it is not necessary to run SharePoint configuration wizard after every SP1 or CU installs. Instead, you can run SharePoint configuration wizard only once after you install all the SharePoint Foundation and SharePoint Server SP1 and CU software. It is also important to install SharePoint Foundation SP1 and CUs before SharePoint Server SP1 and CUs. Having understanding the basics, overall approach for patching SharePoint Server RTM to latest service pack and cumulative updates are below.

Typical process is installing latest service pack and latest CU in the SharePoint Foundation 2010, SharePoint Server 2010, and Office Web Apps 2010 in order. To patch SP1 and Feb 2012 CU, typical order of patching would be as follow

  • Install SharePoint Foundation 2010 SP1
  • Install SharePoint Foundation 2010 Feb 2012 CU
  • Install SharePoint Server 2010 SP1
  • Install SharePoint Server 2010 Feb 2012 CU
  • Run SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard
  • Install Office Web Apps 2010 SP1
  • Install Office Web Apps 2010 Feb 2012 CU
  • Run SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard

Let’s walk through the installation process.

Step 3 – Install SharePoint Foundation 2010 SP1 – sharepointfoundation2010sp1-kb2460058-x64-fullfile-en-us.exe

Don’t reboot the VM

Step 4 – Install SharePoint Foundation 2010 Feb 2012 CU – sharepointfoundation2010-kb2597132fullfil_feb2012.exe

Don’t reboot the VM

Step 5 – Install SharePoint Server 2010 SP1 – sharepointserver2010sp1-kb2460045-x64-fullfile-en-us.exe

Don’t reboot the VM

Step 6 – Install SharePoint Server 2010 Feb 2012 CU – sharepointserver2010-kb2597150fullfilex64glb_feb2012.exe

Reboot the VM

Step 7 – If you haven’t reboot on previous step, Reboot the machine.

Run SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard

Step 8 – Install Office Web Apps 2010 SP1 – officewebapps2010sp1-kb2460073-x64-fullfile-en-us.exe

Don’t reboot the VM.

Step 9 – Install Office Web Apps 2010 Feb 2012 CU – officewebapps2010-kb2598022fullfilex64glb_feb2012.exe

Step 10 – If you haven’t reboot on previous step, Reboot the machine.

Run SharePoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard again, Follow same steps as Step 7.

This completes patching of Single Server Farm – SharePoint Server 2010 RTM VM to SharePoint Server 2010 SP1 and SharePoint Server February 2012 CU.
